Six R&B Songs from the 90's for a Wedding Reception First Dance

The love for 90’s music continues strong through the end of 2019. I’m always surprised at how many people who are too young to have lived through that era love the music to the point of wanting 90’s songs for important parts of their wedding reception. Since many clients have asked for recommendations for 90’s music to use in their program, here are a few 90’s R&B songs that are great choices for your First Dance, in no particular order.

Disclaimer: Unless the client really wants the whole song, I never play the whole thing. This is a classic but 4 and a half minutes is a long time to dance in front of everyone. All that aside, this is an iconic song by one of the best vocalist of all-time. RIP Whitney!

Anyone who claims to know 90’s R&B better know this song. Even in the 90’s this song stood out among the rest. SWV has a lot of great songs. If you’re not familiar with their discography, check them out.

One of my most favorite songs of this genre, period. It’s also one of the reasons I even made this list. The lyrics, the vibe, the production and the vocal arrangements all make for an amazing first dance song.

This song almost didn't make the list just because through the early 2000’s this song was the most overused first dance song. Used to drive me crazy that every single couple wanted it for their first dance. However, it’s less common now that everyone wants Ed Sheeran or Dan + Shay 😁

A remake of Midnight Star’s 1983 version, this 1997 rendition features 2 young stars that continued to see success through the early 2000’s. Couldn’t do a list like this without including a duet.

Speaking of duets, here’s a heater for you guys. This list was originally 5 songs until I realized that I forgot about this one. This song doesn’t need me to explain it. Just listen.

So those are just 6 R&B recommendations from the 90’s from The Perfect Wedding DJs. That decade is full of great R&B songs so feel free to do your own research to find more gems.

For those that are very familiar with that era, what other R&B songs would you recommend for a First Dance?
